Chiropractor For Seniors In Wheaton, IL

Seniors face many changes as they age, including physical and cognitive decline. Some of the most common changes in seniors include decreased mobility, increased risk of falls, chronic pain, and decreased balance. Factors contributing to these changes include decreased bone density, decreased muscle mass, and a decline in overall health. Spinal health is a critical component of overall health, especially in later years, and is essential for maintaining mobility, reducing pain, and avoiding falls.

Chiropractic care is a valuable healthcare option for older adults because it helps maintain spinal health and mobility. Chiropractors can help seniors manage chronic pain, improve posture, and increase flexibility. By keeping the spine in alignment and reducing joint degeneration, chiropractic care can help the elderly enjoy a healthier life and live longer. Additionally, it is a safe and noninvasive option that can complement other medical treatments, reducing the need for medication and surgery.

If I could give 10 stars I would. It’s honestly hard to put into words how much Dr. Mark and Wheaton Family Chiropractor have impacted my life. I’ve been seeing him for 15 years now, and even after moving all over the U.S., I’ve never found another chiropractor who compares to the level of care, attention, and genuine compassion I’ve experienced here. When I first came in, I was only 22 years old and struggling with debilitating chronic neck and low back pain. I was miserable, discouraged, and being told by multiple doctors that cortisone shots and spinal fusions were my only options. Finding Dr. Mark completely changed the direction of my life. I have still never had any type of shot or surgery, I got off all pain medication and have been able to get back to all physical activities. But beyond the physical healing, he gave me hope again at a time when I really needed it. He truly listens, cares about his patients, and wants to help you feel your best long term, not just give you a quick fix. Now, I live in Chicago and still drive an hour to see him because it’s that worth it to me. Going to Wheaton Family Chiropractor has become such an important part of my weekly routine and overall health, and I honestly can’t imagine trusting anyone else with my care. What’s even more special is seeing the impact he’s had on my family too. My parents are both in their 70s and have seen massive improvements in their pain, mobility, and overall health under Dr. Mark’s care. Watching them feel better, move better, and enjoy life more has meant so much to me. I’m incredibly grateful for everything Dr. Mark and the team at Wheaton Family Chiro has done for me and my family over the years. If you’re dealing with pain or searching for someone who genuinely cares about long term health, I can’t recommend them enough.

For most of my adult life, I went from chiropractor to chiropractor until I eventually stopped going. I started feeling like my money could have been spent better elsewhere, so I gradually moved away from chiropractic care. I originally found Wheaton Family Chiropractic while looking for a Halo Posture weighted headband after doing weighted headband exercises at The Movement Guild. I scheduled a visit mainly to buy one, but that visit turned into a consultation with Dr. Mark Myers and changed how I viewed chiropractic care. I came in with years of nagging muscle and joint issues, including a hard to explain feeling that the left side of my neck was being pulled. Other chiropractors either seemed confused by that description or reworded it into something else. Dr. Mark was the first chiropractor who took that description seriously and evaluated it in a way that felt specific to what I was experiencing. During the consultation, X-rays were taken. While I was waiting for my results to be pulled up, I saw two X-rays posted and thought, “Yikes... whose grandpa spent 70 years carrying groceries on one side only?” Then Dr. Mark explained they were my X-rays, and I had scoliosis. What stands out most is that Wheaton Family Chiropractic does not rely only on adjustments. They combine chiropractic care with posture work, corrective exercises, and rehab style treatment, which makes more sense to me because long term improvement usually requires active work, not just passive treatment. I also appreciate that they use vibration plates fixed at 30 Hz. Unlike many Power Plate vibration machines at gyms where people change settings for general fitness, the 30 Hz setting is used more intentionally as part of the treatment process. It is something I always look forward to during my visits. In my profession, back problems are extremely common and can shorten careers. I am grateful that my back is probably in the best condition it has ever been. I genuinely believe Wheaton Family Chiropractic may be one of the best chiropractic offices in Illinois.

Over three years ago, I was diagnosed with autoimmune disorders. Unfortunately My PC didn’t have a treatment plan to help alleviate my symptoms. I then realized, I had to start advocating for my own health. Which started my journey to a holistic/naturopathic way of life. While researching I came across Wheaton Family Chiropractic clinic. I’ve been a patient now for 2 years. I started with their corrective program, designed for my personal needs. I’m now down to once every other week. My migraines have become a rarity and my inflammation is much more manageable. Dr. Mark and Dr. John have educated me on much more than just chiropractic care. They teach you about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and how to treat your symptoms. It’s given me my life back! I can’t give the Doctors all the credit, it definitely takes a team! The staff is absolutely incredible!!! Jaqueline is the best when scheduling me in last minute or answering any questions I might have over the phone or via text. Bella and Tess are there to help guide you through all the exercises/equipment during your appointment. They have always made me feel at ease , even when nervous starting out. These ladies are genuine and kind! Because I’ve had great results, I now have my 11 yo completing her corrective care program. I would highly recommend!!!

Common Conditions We Treat With Chiropractic Care in Wheaton, IL

Arthritis

Arthritis is common in older adults, causing pain, inflammation, and joint stiffness. As people age, the risk of developing arthritis increases due to joint wear and tear. Seniors with arthritis may experience difficulty with activities of daily living and mobility. Treatment options for arthritis in older adults include medication, physical therapy, assistive devices, and, in some cases, joint surgery. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating a well-balanced diet, and regular chiropractic care can help seniors avoid invasive arthritis treatments by reducing symptoms and slowing the disease’s progression.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy, also known as peripheral neuropathy, is a common condition affecting the peripheral nerves. It leads to numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain in the hands and feet. It is especially common in older adults and can be caused by various factors, such as diabetes, chronic alcohol use, certain medications, and nerve damage due to injury or illness.

In seniors and older adults, neuropathy can lead to a loss of balance and coordination, making them more susceptible to falls. It can also interfere with their ability to perform daily activities, leading to reduced independence and mobility. Neuropathy treatment options depend on the underlying cause but may include pain management, physical therapy, and medications to manage symptoms. In some cases, with chiropractic care, nerve damage can be reversed, but in others, it is permanent.

The elderly and older adults must discuss neuropathy symptoms with their healthcare provider. Early detection and chiropractic treatment can help prevent further nerve damage and improve their quality of life. Additionally, managing underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, and avoiding habits that can damage nerves, such as excessive alcohol consumption, can also help prevent or slow the progression of neuropathy.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is common among seniors and older adults, often caused by arthritis, nerve damage, or other age-related conditions. The discomfort and limited mobility associated with chronic pain negatively impact an older person’s quality of life and independence. Effective management of chronic pain is important to improve their daily lives.

Chiropractic care, exercise, weight loss, and assistive devices can help alleviate pain and improve mobility. Complementary therapies such as massage therapy and spinal manipulation can also provide relief.

Seniors and their caregivers need open communication with their healthcare providers to determine the best approach to managing chronic pain. In some cases, psychological support and counseling can help manage pain and improve mental health. It’s also essential for the elderly to stay socially engaged and to participate in activities they enjoy, as this can improve overall well-being and help manage chronic pain.

Falls

Falls among elderly individuals are a significant health concern. As people age, their risk of falling increases due to physical changes such as muscle weakness, vision impairment, and decreased balance. Falls can lead to serious injuries such as fractures, head injuries, and even death. Furthermore, fear of falling can lead to a decline in physical activity.

To prevent falls, seniors can take simple steps such as removing tripping hazards, improving lighting, and exercising to improve balance and strength. Chiropractic care helps prevent injuries by optimizing the musculoskeletal and nervous systems to improve coordination, reaction time, and mobility. Regular vision and hearing checks are also recommended. Medications that cause dizziness or drowsiness should be reviewed with a healthcare provider.

Preventing falls is a shared responsibility and requires the involvement of healthcare providers, families, and communities. For example, home modifications can make a big difference in reducing the risk of falls. Making homes safer for seniors can help prevent falls, increase their confidence, and improve their quality of life.

Joint Pain

Joint pain is common among seniors and older individuals due to the natural wear and tear of joints with age. The joints of the body, such as the hips, knees, and hands, may become stiff, sore, and less flexible over time. Additionally, conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout can lead to joint pain in old age. This can significantly impact seniors’ quality of life, making everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and even getting dressed difficult. In some cases, joint pain can also cause depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

Chiropractic care improves joint health, mobility, and strength. Optimizing the nervous system with chiropractic adjustments speeds up recovery times and naturally relieves pain. Seniors should seek medical attention if they are experiencing persistent joint pain, as early intervention can help reduce the progression of the underlying condition and improve the overall quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should seniors go to chiropractors?

The elderly can benefit from visiting chiropractors, as chiropractic care can help alleviate joint pain and improve mobility. Many seniors experience joint pain due to natural wear and tear, arthritis, or other conditions. Chiropractors use gentle manual adjustments to help realign the spine and joints, reducing pain and improving function. They offer lifestyle changes and exercise advice to help seniors maintain mobility and independence. Regular chiropractic care can help the elderly maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, tailoring an individualized treatment plan to their specific needs and health goals.

Is chiropractic safe for seniors with arthritis?

Chiropractic care is safe for seniors with arthritis and is an excellent natural, non-invasive arthritis treatment. Chiropractors use gentle manual adjustments to help relieve joint pain and improve mobility in individuals with arthritis. This can help reduce inflammation, improve joint function, and alleviate pain. However, every individual’s health and conditions are unique, so it is essential to thoroughly evaluate and develop a personalized treatment plan considering any pre-existing medical conditions or medications. If the senior has any concerns or questions, they should discuss them with their chiropractor or physician before starting treatment. Regular chiropractic care can be an effective part of a holistic approach to managing arthritis in seniors.

What does good posture look like?

Good posture for seniors involves maintaining an upright and balanced position that reduces joint and muscle stress. This includes keeping the head and neck aligned with the spine, shoulders relaxed and level and the abdominal muscles slightly engaged. Weight should be evenly distributed on both feet when standing. The hips should be fully supported when sitting, and the lower back should be slightly curved.

Good posture helps to reduce the risk of falls and injuries, improve balance and stability, and alleviate joint and muscle pain. It also promotes better breathing and overall physical and mental well-being. Regular exercise and physical activity can also help seniors maintain good posture and reduce the risk of injury.

How do chiropractors know where to adjust?

Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to determine where to adjust a patient’s spine. These include observation, palpation, and often X-rays to see the position and alignment of spinal vertebrae. We will feel for areas of restricted movement or tenderness and ask the patient about their symptoms and medical history. By combining all this information, the chiropractor can identify areas in the spine that are misaligned or causing discomfort and make adjustments to improve alignment and relieve pain.

Is chiropractic care just for pain relief?

No, chiropractic care is not just for pain relief. While chiropractic can effectively treat many types of pain, such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches, it also has a broader scope of focus. Chiropractors aim to improve overall health by addressing the root cause of health problems, which may be related to the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and other factors. Chiropractic care improves mobility, balance, and coordination, boosts immune function, and even reduces stress. It’s a holistic approach to health that aims to help the body function at its best.
